With a new school year just around the corner, families around the Lower Mainland are preparing. We’ve put together your cheat sheet for back to school tips on how to make the transition from lazy days to the crazed days of school day routines!
Summer is all about sleeping in and stretching out the evening. When it comes to getting back into a school routine, setting a clock and sticking to it will the best thing you can do. We’ve all heard the “I’m not tired!” whine, which means we also know the kids won’t stop until their heads hit the pillow. They may not act tired, but enforcing an earlier bedtime will ensure a good night’s rest and easier mornings when it’s time to get up and out the door. Tip: two weeks before school starts, start moving bedtime back by 15 – 30 minutes at a time until it’s more school-friendly.
Mornings are nothing short of crazy when it comes to getting the kids ready for school while parents prepare for a full work day ahead as well. Try organizing outfits, backpacks, and lunches the evening before so everything is laid out and ready to put on, grab, and go. The key is being firm and consistent: set times for when everything has to happen by — breakfast eaten, teeth brushed, shoes on — and what time you’re leaving the house. Then everyone is on the same page, and there’s no ifs ands or buts.
Packing a nutritious lunch for your kid every day can be daunting and time consuming. But having the right food as fuel also goes a long way to ensuring your child’s mental, physical and social health to get through the day. Have older kids? Get them involved: provide good choices and let them pack it themselves to encourage eating it on the other end. Got younger ones? Pinterest is a wealth of ideas when it comes to pre-packing lunches!
You know your kids best, so you’ll know if they’re freshes to get homework done straightaway after school, or after they’ve had a short break with a snack before digging into their work. Try different times, find the one that works, and then set is as the mandatory homework stop and start time every evening. Having a deadline will make the task seem less daunting to your kids, and hopefully you’ll experience a few less tears along the way.
