Monday, September 5th marks Labour Day, summer’s unofficial swan song to do something fun before it’s back-to-school and back to routine. Round up the family and hit up one of our favourite things to do around Vancouver as you officially say goodbye to summer and herald the fall.
Celebrate Canada at Festival Park – A Tribute to Canadian Summer showcasing a cultural mosaic of Canadian talent, new at the PNE for this year only. Along with fan favourite Summer Night Concerts, free with admission, and several other performances and exhibits that disappear after September 5th, the PNE is still one of Vancouver’s best family attractions.
Venture over to North Van via car or take the sea bus right into the action on the Quay. Their popular Farmers’ Market is every Saturday 10am – 3pm on the East Plaza, featuring conventional and organic products, local artisans, a book swap and kids play area. Stay for the Dinner & Outdoor Movie from 7 – 10pm on the 3rd, or venture out on the 4th for live music from 1 – 3pm. Information on all these events can be found on their website.
Catch a performance of one of Shakespeare’s famed plays at this annual festival in Vanier Park. One of Canada’s premier theatre experiences, Bard presents The Merry Wives of Windsor, Pericles, Romeo & Juliet, and Othello for your viewing pleasure this year. Click here for the full schedule, along with a special Salon Series on the holiday Monday that takes you behind the scenes for a panel discussion on Shakespearean costume.
Now that the summer crowds have wound down, play tourist in your own town with a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride around Stanley Park. The one-hour ride is fully narrated by your driver, giving a historical account of the park’s art, sights, and surrounding landmarks.
Stretch out the remaining summer ray’s with a family picnic at one of Vancouver’s many parks. If there’s one thing the Lower Mainland does better than anywhere else, it’s the natural beauty we’re fortunate to live amongst in one of the country’s most beautiful cities.
Happy Labour Day and have a wonderful long weekend!
