If there’s one thing the Lower Mainland isn’t lacking, it’s an abundant amount of beautiful, usable green space. While Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth, and Pacific Spirit parks are all famous for a reason, we’ve rounded up a few that could be your new favourite spot for picnics, playgrounds, and good old-fashioned outdoor fun this summer because of the multitude of amenities each provides.
The 27-hectare John Hendry Park is one of East Van’s most popular outdoor destinations with an unbeatable family-friendly vibe. Just south of the The Drive, John Hendry features gorgeous mountain views, two playgrounds, an off-leash dog area, numerous sports amenities, jogging trails, and a miniature beach at Trout Lake.
Three distinct sections along Northwest Marine Drive comprise the Spanish Banks. A stretch of beach when the water is at low tide, is 1KM off shore. 8 volleyball courts, several concessions, free parking, barbecues permitted, an off-leash dog beach, grassy areas and stunning views of English Bay and the mountains make this an unforgettable spot.
A short drive away is the Steveston Community Park. The 30 acre sprawl of lush green, expansive playground for tykes, and waterpark is designed around a fishing village theme in honour of Steveston’s origins. It also features a heated outdoor pool with shallow tot pool.
Vanier Park just east of Kits Beach offers great walking trails, views of False Creek, and proximity to Granville Island for nearby amenities. It’s also home to Vancouver’s Maritime Museum and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre featuring a Planetarium and Observatory if you’re feeling like some science after an afternoon of lounging.
The Granville Island Water Park is a Vancouver institution. The biggest, free water park in North American features waterslides and other water-based activities surrounded by lush green, shaded spots for afternoon picnics. Open Victoria Day through September 5th, 7 days a week.
