Hot Chocolate may get a bad rap as Children’s Menu fodder, but originally it was the drink of choice for the upper class who looked down on coffee as pedestrian. Our Eastside realtors rounded up our favourite places nestled in among Mt. Pleasant real estate and surroundings for the best mug of hot cocoa to sip, savour and reminisce of cozy childhood days to beat those January winter blues.
Find Parisian-worthy macarons and crêpes at this Mt. Pleasant institution, along with a cup of unforgettable hot chocolate. They will be participating in Vancouver’s annual Hot Chocolate Festival January 19th – February 14th with four new flavours ranging from surprising pairings like pear and dark chocolate to gingerbread, orange and blond chocolate.
Also head into the Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood for this Vancouver institution during the Hot Chocolate Festival and you’ll be enjoying more than their seasonal offerings of amazing ice cream. Each year Earnest Ice Cream creates a special hot chocolate flavour for the festival, usually accompanied by a healthy scoop of what they do best.
Not quite in Vancouver Eastside, Fairview has a chocolate shop not to be missed. Choose from Chocolate Arts’ 12 single origin cocoas of both dark and milk variations, and then customize to personal taste for a rainy day indulgence like no other. Pair with house-made truffles for a little bit of heaven, or sample the homemade paninis for a full lunch affair. 1620 West 3rd Ave.
Make your way to 2820 South Granville St. for the Fairview location of Daniel le Chocolate Belge. Daniel Poncelet’s chain of boutiques offering belgian-style chocolates made from 100% pure ingredients also has the perfect cup of hot chocolate to go while you shop the South Granville strip.
On the edge of Fairview at 2150 Fir St., Beaucoup Bakery and Cafe offers a variety of delectable French pastries (note: their croissants have made Vancouver Magazine’s ‘Best’ list) to accompany their delicious hot chocolate. You can even get a tin of Beacoup’s Hot Chocolate Mix for retail.
For more updates on Vancouver’s upcoming 7th annual Hot Chocolate Fest, visit their site for all the participating locations and mouth-watering concoctions. Cheers!
